I've tried all sorts of crazy things suggested by random sites to fix this problem, and finally this one actually works! Neither worked for me. I have run many anti-malware cleanups (including SFC mentioned below) and rebootings, but no change. This was exactly what was going on with mine and yes the fix was to remove desktop from the Bitdefender Ransomware portion of the software.
